The 11 Best Record Store Releases (Triple List)

I picked up so much vinyl this year...I'm not even sure how I'm going to pay rent.  And isn't that what good music is about?  Living in a van...down by the river.  There wasn't a release this year that I went in excited about...but I came out loving almost everything I purchased.  I've had the chance to listen to most of my purchases and have heard a lot of other stuff.  And the Calexico album...best release of the year...Period.

It was a crazy day...and I'm still reeling from it.  Some say Record store Day is Christmas for music fans.  It's better than Christmas...because on Record Store Day you get exactly what you want.

To celebrate such a momentousness day and with nearly 400 releases...there's no way to condense it down to a mere 11.  Instead, I've created 3 lists to give light on some on a lot of the material that you may have missed.  And by the way, many record stores still have a lot of product...so if there's something that was sold out at one store...I'd check out the store down the street...just in case.

Here are the 11 Best Record Store Day 7-inches:

  10. Iron & Wine - Next To Paradise

Here are the 11 Best Record Store Day Reissues:

The 11 Best Bands Who Have Never Played Coachella

There's something sadly thrilling about getting to sit in front of my computer and watch Coachells unfold before me without paying hundreds of dollars, enduring crazy temperatures, dust, dirt, and douche bags.  Right now I'm flipping back and forth between New Order and Phoenix.  I couldn't do that at the festival...I would have to choose...currently, I'm winning.  Because at home, I get both.

While enjoying Coachella from the comfort of my home, I started to realize how many bands have never played the festival...some that I'm actually shocked.  Some I thought for sure had played only to find out they had never made the journey to Indio. (Journey being one of them)  Below is a list of the best bands that have never played Coachella.  I have only chosen bands that are still together.  Reunions...well, that's really for another list...so, check in tomorrow for that list.

Who Am I missing?

Here are the 11 Best Bands Who Have Never Played Coachella & Should (that are still together):

  1. U2
  2. Pearl Jam
  3. Ryan Adams

  5. Tori Amos
  6. Royksopp
  7. Iron & Wine
  8. Burial

The 11 Best Songs By Garbage

The hiatus is over.  If Garbage can come back after a seven year break...I can come back after a couple month layover for them.

The biggest challenge in creating a list for this band isn't just listening to the songs and deciding what sounds the best...it's more about sifting through their dozens of B-sides to decide which can lay side-by-side with their album tracks...when most of their B-sides are on par with the album tracks making it that much harder to distinguish between them all.

I have probably spent more time at music stores over the years looking for rare Garbage releases.  I once made a taxi in London stop outside an HMV in hopes to find an elusive double CD for their second album, Version 2.0...and they had it!  For the first three album I have all the CD singles, promo singles, and imports.  One might think they were my favorite band...but they're not.  They just happened to be the most fun to collect.  I liked the music more because of the effort I went through to get it.  I didn't take for granted the chase.  And sometimes...the chase is the best part.

Here are the 11 Best Songs by Garbage:

  1. Only Happy When It Rains (Garbage)

  5. Special (Version 2.0)

The 11 Most Anticipated Albums of Spring 2012

Tebow nation is on fire.  Nothing will further propel his legendary status than throwing 316 in his upset victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.  But was it really an upset?  Was it really that surprising that Denver won?  I don't think so...in fact, I called it.  (I swear...you can ask the one friend I told they were going to win).  There's three things you have to take into account.  First of all, Tebow is not leading a 8-8 team.  He's QBing for a 7-4 team.  There were five games of the season where he wasn't playing.  Even if he only won two of those games, they'd be a 9-7 team.  A 9-7 team upsetting a 12-4 team isn't that big of a stretch...especially since they're playing at home (which is the second factor).  Thirdly, Pittsburgh was injured up the ass.  Literally...I read one of the defensive end injured his ass.  With Mendenhall out...Big Ben at about 50% and half the o/d lines riding the bench...the Steelers were not at full strength.  Denver beating Pittsburgh is a mild upset at best...it doesn't even compare to 7-9 Seattle's upset last year of defending Superbowl Champions New Orleans.  In football...any given Sunday...and team can win.

In music...any given Tuesday, an established vet can release a dud.  A has-been can make a comeback.  Or a new band could become a new trend-setter.  Who will make waves this year...that is something we've never been able to predict.

THE UNKNOWN: Garbage - Another Woman's Treasure - part 2

Right now the world is talking about 3 things:The Simpsons movie - woohoo!, Lindsay Lohan's fun-filled Monday night (who gets drunk on a Monday night?), and the Presidential debate on Youtube. As cool as it seems like having the general public asking the Presidents questions...it's still the general public. These are the people who helped the movie "Wild Hogs" earn 200 million at the box office. Are these really the people you want to ask questions of the next person to run the White House and the most powerful job in the known universe? Do you really think they understand the delicate situation in Darfur or just think it was a funny name on a John Lennon tribute album? That's not a trick question by the way. If you really want to include the general public into the Presidential process, then maybe you should consider something novel like...letting everyone vote for the next President. I can't remember the last time we were able to do that.

Garbage is one of those bands who puts out almost as many B-sides as they do album tracks. At last count they had 47 album tracks and 39 B-sides. That's not a bad competition. I've broken up the B-sides into two albums: Another Woman's Treasure (tracks culled from Garbage and Version 2.0) and Fusion (tracks culled from Beautiful Garbage and Bleed Like Me).

The 11 Best Garbage Songs

Every once in awhile, the TV industry does something smart. This season, instead of canceling the failing shows and shoving them up on a shelf somewhere, they took the remaining episodes and aired them at the very end of the TV season...giving fans one last chance to enjoy the show that they were merely tempted with. Both "Studio 60" and "Standoff," two shows that were better than their ratings gave them credit for, were among the shows that were given new life early this summer. Many times, TV producers put good shows in terrible time slots and can't understand why they didn't take off. Jericho aired opposite of American Idol. Of course it's numbers were down. Even though the American Idol fad is still beyond me. Don't people realize it's just a remake of Star Steach? What's next...a Solid Gold remake?

The makers of TV shows need to do a better job of picking shows the audience wants to see. Why not let the summer audiences watch the failed pilots...if one has a positive reaction...then maybe it deserves a 2nd life....or would that be too smart of a thing to do.

Here are the 11 Best Garbage Songs (files were taken from their epic British radio performance in 2002)
