The 11 Best Songs By Moby of the 00s

Continuing the countdown to the release of my book, here's the Moby chapter.  I would love to hear your thoughts!!

In 1999, Moby released his ground-breaking album Play. The album turned electronic music on its side with its historically haunting audio sampling.  For one brief moment, Moby's sound was the only game in town. In the '00s Moby might be best remembered for being the target of Eminem's wrath at the 2002 MTV video awards.  After Moby called Eminem a homophobe, racist and misogynist, Eminem's ire had so much strength that it not only publicly embarrassed Moby, but it also derailed his musical popularity.  Play made Moby one of the most respected songwriting innovators.  Eminem's angst made him last night's leftovers.

After that, Moby's career wasn't the same.  Even though 18 sonically picked up where Play had left off, it was criticized for being too safe.  Moby had set his own bar too high.  He pushed his sound on Hotel but it was dismissed for lacking focus.  He tried to win back his original techno fans on Last Night, by combining early techno with a modern twist.  No dice.  On his 2009 release, Wait For Me, he put out his best-reviewed album of the decade.  Many praised Moby's return and welcomed his comeback.  If it hadn't been for Eminem, would they have realized that Moby had never left?  From 18's darker vision of loneliness, to Hotel's personal honesty, to Last Night's viral enthusiasm, while no one was paying attention, Moby continued to build a richly layered catalogue of music on par with his best efforts.

The 11 Best Moby Remixes of the Past Decade

Why does everyone think that Tim Tebow is such a douche?

What has the guy done really except be an uber outspoken Christian?  Sure you could fault him for being outspoken.  Or a Christian...but is anything that he's saying really that awful...or just annoying?  The guy goes to foreign countries and builds houses for poor people.  How does that make him a douche?  He plays his own style of football...wins games...yet we hate him.  Why? I have no idea...but the guy really is just a douche.  I think some people are just douches.  No matter what they do...they are just annoying.  Tebow will never escape being a douche...and I can say that cause I have to root for him every weekend as a Bronco fan.  So far...that's been pretty damn fun.

The 11 Best Songs By Moby of the 00s

In the 90s, Moby was a stud.  He basically owned the underground club scene, re-inventing rave culture with every new release.  Then in the mid-90s, when rave culture crept into the mainstream dance clubs, Moby dominated with his epic release after release.  He ruled soundtracks and scores, even re-imagining the iconic James Bond theme.  He had one misstep with his ill-advised rock album...but even that produced a college radio hit with the cover of "That's When I Reach For My Revolver."  Moby left the decade on top with is critical and mainstream masterpiece, Play.

The 00s were more miss and less hit for Moby.  After Eminem's dissing of Moby for really no reason, Moby struggled to recapture the rabid audience he used to have.  But like his earlier career, he never settled with one specific sound.  He was all over the map, experimenting with new sounds, old sounds, and everything in between.  And what I loved most about Moby is how with each new album, he would release a companion album, filled with either new music or re-interpretations of the album.  Hotel and Wait For Me had ambient albums to accompany them.  18 had a b-sides album and Last Night featured a Remixed album.  Though this decade was much quieter for Moby, he made just as much noise as he ever had.

Here are the 11 Best Songs By Moby of the 00s:

1.  Sunday (The Day Before My Birthday) - (18)
2.  At Least We Tried (18)
3.  Raining Again (Hotel)

8.  Where You End (Hotel)
9.  Mistake (Wait For Me)
10.  In This World (18)

Is the best album of the year? No. Is it the best album Moby's ever done? No. But is it worth $4...absolutely...

The 11 Best Moby Songs:

Charlton Heston died this past weekend. I was discussing with my friends which were his best movies. Obviously, Ten Commandments...Planet of the Apes, Soylent Green, and Ben-Hur. But I threw in Bowling for Columbine. My friends rained down all manner of criticism upon me. How could I be so disrespectful at such a sorrowful time? Honestly, I don't think I was. Bowling For Columbine was an Oscar winning film. (Heston's touch was a big part of that) It's currently the fifth highest grossing documentary of all time. Armageddon is Heston's only other big box office feature and it doesn't even crack the top 50. And B4C was a cultural phenomenon. People get too touchy when it comes to political beliefs. A good film is a good film despite if it's made by a anti-semitic nut job (Apocalypto). And a good album is a good album...even if the singer is well...a bit off kilter.

Here are The 11 Best Moby Songs:

1. God Moving Over The Face of the World (Everything Is Wrong)
2. Everytime You Touch Me (Everything Is Wrong)
3. At Least We Tried (18)
4. Sunday (The Day Before My Birthday) (18)
5. Move (Move single)
6. Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad? (Play)
7. When It's Cold I'd Like To Die (Everything Is Wrong)
8. Where You End (Hotel)
9. Porcelain (Play)
10. James Bond Theme (I Like To Score)
11. Go (Moby)
