The Unknown: Morrissey at Pauley Pavilion

So far I've seen some good results from my mini-pledge drive. I promise if I get a few more purchases I'll add the second disc to the Weezer Black & White album. So if you haven't checked out our store...please do so now...lots to choose from. It's not a bad deal...you're getting a ultra rare disc of Weezer material...a full length album at a great price...and you feel good for supporting the artists.

One release that came out with only a little fanfare this past week was the new Morrissey B-Side collection, (Swords) pooling together bonus tracks from this decade's albums. In honor of Morrissey diving into his non-mainstream material...I have done likewise. Below is not the best Moz concert...but in fact one that might like to be forgotten. Playing at UCLA's infamous Pauley Pavilion, Moz only made it halfway through the set before the students rushed the stage in a giddy frenzy. It's not often you hear a boot where the show gets canceled mid-gig. But I guarantee you...Moz this makes it worth the listen.

I'm off on vacation for a couple of weeks...but will return. Until then...here's a snapshot of the first half of the year. These are my favorites. I can't belive I picked Morrissey at the top. But it's the album that's had the most play in my 2009 library. So...it's hard to argue with that.

1. Morrissey - Years of Refusal (Black Cloud)
2. Samantha Crain - Songs in the Night
3. White Rabbits - It's Frightening
4. The Antlers - Hospice
5. Metric - Fantasies

The 11 Best Morrissey Albums

I wanted to do a list of Morrissey's best B-Sides but I am severely lacking in that category. I have about 20 of them...but am missing at least 20. Who knew he was that prolific? I guess it's time he put out another B-Side comp.

I've included some of the B-side comps since they rank well alongside the albums.

The 11 Best Morrissey Albums:

1. Viva Hate (1988)
2. Your Arsenal (1992)
3. Vauxhall and I (1994)
4. Bona Drag (1990)
5. You Are The Quarry (2004)
6. Ringleader of the Tormentors (2006)
7. Maladjusted (1997)
8. World of Morrissey (1995)
9. Southpaw Grammar (1995)
10. My Early Burgalary Years (1997)
11. Kill Uncle (1991)

Bonus B-side from way back: Get Off The Stage

The 11 Best Songs By Morrissey

Record labels are determined to blame the down swing in the record sales on illegal downloading...peer-to-peer networks, bloggers, 11-year-olds in their parents basement...all of them are the most evil people on the planet. But do you know who the biggest culprit of sharing music? Do you know who gives away more free music than anyone else? Don't worry, you'll never guess it. It's the PUBLIC LIBRARY! Yes, that's right. Public libraries stock CDs. Hundreds upon hundreds of CDs. And all of these CDs can be checked out. What happens? People come in...check out a dozen CDs...go home...burn them...then come back a week later for another dozen. And libraries aren't just stocked with the bottom of the barrell. Many times, the libraries are given new releases by the record labels themselves. California alone has over one million CDs in its libraries. And the funniest thing about this...it's all one hundred percent...legal.

Do I have to guess where you'll be going tomorrow?

The 11 Best Morrissey Songs

Is there anything more arbitrary than a Morrissey song? I thought I was in trouble when I tried to do a "best of" for Radiohead...but I luckily slid by that one unscathed. Maybe it was all the B-Sides I listed the day before. But picking the best Morrissey is like deciding which of your kids you like best. Better yet...deciding which Morrissey songs are the best is like deciding which of your kids to save from a burning building when you can only save one! That may seem like an exaggerated example...but have you seen Morrissey fans? If you spell his name wrong they'll castrate you on the spot.

Last night, I saw night 9 of Morrissey's 10-night stay at the Hollywood Palladium. This is the last concert series before the Palladium is demolished for possible remodeling...although the word is it may be turned into a mini-mall complete with a Dunkin Doughnuts and a Panda Express.

It's a very sad day for my live music viewing life. I have seen countless great shows at the Palladium (Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys, Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage, Foo Fighters, Rage Against The Machine, Green Day, Tool, Alice in Chains). This is a piece of my musical history...gone forever. Going out with Morrissey was almost poetic. I have never seen Morrissey, even though I've been a Smiths fan all my life. For lack of a better word...it was "perfect."

The 11 Best Morrissey Songs:

1. Tomorrow (Your Arsenal)
2. I Don't Mind If You Forget Me (Viva Hate)
3. Everyday is Like Sunday (Viva Hate)
4. Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself (Vauxhall and I)
5. We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful (Your Arsenal)
6. Will Never Marry (Bona Drag)
7. First of the Gang To Die (You Are The Quarry)
8. Suedehead (Viva Hate)
9. Sister, I'm A Poet (World of Morrissey)
10. The Youngest Was The Most Loved (Ringleader)
11. I Like You (You Are The Quarry)
