The 11 Biggest Flips of Record Store Day 2015

You can't read anything about Record Store Day anymore without reading some article whose author spends pages of digital content, complaining about the vinyl holiday. "It's killing independent stores," "it excludes indie labels," and it's only for unnecessary major label titles."  You know what would be worse than Record Store Day?  NO RECORD STORE DAY.  A world where there is nothing promoting independent records stores, causing them to fade and dissolve into music history alongside the 8-track, mini-disc, and reel-to-reel.  But today, music stores are alive and well...in part, thanks to record store day.  Record stores having to deal with throngs of audiophiles twice a year (Black Friday) is a way better scenario than dealing with foreclosure.  .
Another complaint comes from independent labels themselves who have found their material excluded by the event coordinators.  Read here about Father/Daughter's comp, which seemed like a rather cool release.  Sure there are some releases that get excluded...and there are some titles that seem unnecessary.  But even if we're talking about 10% of the titles or even 25% of the released titles being unnecessary...that still leaves 300 great vital releases!  Isn't it worth some crap to get some gold?  That said, I'm not even sure how we determine which titles are unnecessary.  I read bloggers claiming the Citizen Dick release was the most unnecessary title this year...it's an unreleased Pearl Jam song from the 1991/Ten era version of the band!  I bought it and it's the title I've listened to more than any other release.  If someone wants to buy them...then doesn't that make them necessary?  (and the Citizen Dick record just missed this list...so the 12th most popular record flip is somehow unnecessary?  Okay...)
That said...it's hard to determine prior to the holiday which albums will sell out in seconds and which ones will linger until August.  Some of the most talked about releases including Courtney Barnett, Brian Eno, and Run The Jewels were still available at stores late on Sunday afternoon.  While others (like Brand New) had people lining up the night before.  I mean seriously, how is Brand New's reissue of a 12-year old album that is readily available on Spotify and itunes AND coming out in wide release next month the number one Ebay flip merely because it comes in a paper bag?  Every store I visiting had people waiting 12-24 hours for this record.
For this list, I determined the ranking based on list price versus Ebay sale...and what was the greatest increase in comparison to the price.  Stereogum lists Jurassic 5's $100 Ebay sale as a big flip...but the list price was $90 to begin with.  That's only a $10 increase.  Same with Phish's Live 1995 6-disc set that listed at $160 but sold for $200.  The biggest flips versus price, I believe, truly shows what were the must-have vinyls of RSD 2015.
Here are the biggest Ebay Flips of Record Store Day 2015:
  1. Elvis Presley - My Happiness (List price $12 - Ebay price $245) 20.5x increase
  2. Brand New - Deja Entendu (List price $28 - Ebay price $384) 13.7x increase
  3. Interpol - Everything Is Wrong (List price $9 - Ebay price $99) 11x increase
  4. John Prine - September 78 (List price $25 - Ebay price $227) 10.1x increase
  5. David Bowie - Changes (List price $11 - Ebay price $99) 9x increase
  6. Bob Dylan - Basement Tapes (List price $30 - Ebay price $250) 8.3x increase
  7. Citizen Dick - Touch Me I'm Dick (List price $11 - Ebay price $69) 6.3x increase
  8. Ryan Adams - Come Pick Me Up (List price $9 - Ebay price $59) 5.9x increase
  9. U2 - Songs of Innocence (List price $36 - Ebay price $199) 5.5x increase
  10. Twenty One Pilots - The LC LP (List price $20 - Ebay price $99) 4.9x increase
  11. Foo Fighters - Songs From The Laundry Room (List price $20 - Ebay price $99) 4.9x increase
Honorable Mention:
Paul McCartney's Sweet Trash sold for a ridiculous $895 but I didn't include it since it's signed by Sir Mac (which obviously alters the true value of the vinyl).

The 11 Best Bands Who Have Never Played Coachella

There's something sadly thrilling about getting to sit in front of my computer and watch Coachells unfold before me without paying hundreds of dollars, enduring crazy temperatures, dust, dirt, and douche bags.  Right now I'm flipping back and forth between New Order and Phoenix.  I couldn't do that at the festival...I would have to choose...currently, I'm winning.  Because at home, I get both.

While enjoying Coachella from the comfort of my home, I started to realize how many bands have never played the festival...some that I'm actually shocked.  Some I thought for sure had played only to find out they had never made the journey to Indio. (Journey being one of them)  Below is a list of the best bands that have never played Coachella.  I have only chosen bands that are still together.  Reunions...well, that's really for another list...so, check in tomorrow for that list.

Who Am I missing?

Here are the 11 Best Bands Who Have Never Played Coachella & Should (that are still together):

  1. U2
  2. Pearl Jam
  3. Ryan Adams
  4. Fiona Apple
  5. Tori Amos
  6. Royksopp
  7. Iron & Wine
  8. Burial
  9. Morcheeba
  10. Sufjan Stevens
  11. Garbage

The 11 Best Rumored Albums of 2013

One of the best things about a new year is a whole set of new speculation about what albums could possibly be coming our way.  I've collected the best of them...let's see how many come true.

Here are the 11 Best Rumored Albums of 2013:

  1. U2 (July) - Mercury Records announced the new album was coming in 2013...but no word yet from the band.
  2. My Bloody Valentine - Album #3 (June) - Twenty-two years in the making, Kevin Shields claims the new album was completed on December 21st.  But will he let us hear it?
  3. Arcade Fire (September) - The band's in the studio now with James Murphy, eyeing a late fourth quarter release.
  4. Pearl Jam (October) - The band keeps saying they're working on a new album but no time line has been solidified.
  5. Modest Mouse (August) - The mouse does everything at a glacial pace but they've been writing and recording for a couple years now.  Along with playing many new songs live...the time seems right.
  6. MGMT - MGMT (June) - The band has been working on the album since 2011 and has said the release was imminent since then.
  7. The National (September) - They've been playing new songs live and have stated they're looking at a 2013 release.
  8. Portishead - Fourth (October) - Barrow claimed to start work on a new album in Sept 2011.  While two years is a normal pace for most bands...this is Portishead...it could mean ten years.  Here's to being optimistic.
  9. Vampire Weekend (May) - They've been playing new songs and are claiming a new release this spring.  Looks promising.
  10. Rilo Kiley (April) - With an obscure Facebook update...it could only mean one of two things.  New album or Coachella appearance.  Okay, three:  both.
  11. Wolfmother - Gatherings (March) - The band claimed that a new album would be coming in March.  But they said this last year, too.
Bonus:  Dr. Dre - Detox (November) - Sometimes wishes are granted.

The 11 Best Albums By Pearl Members

It's been three years since our last Pearl Jam album but that hasn't stopped the members from keeping productive.  This year alone...there have been three side projects put out by PJ members.  Earlier this year we had a new Brad album, United We Stand.  And just in the past month, two new side projects were released.  The first album features Jeff Ament and Joseph Arthur, called RNDM.  The second group...which is actually truly random...features Duff McKagan (of Guns N Roses) and Mike McCready, called Walking Papers.  Two decades ago, Duff and Mike represented two different worlds of popular music.  Duff was in one of the most heralded metal group of 80s with Guns N Roses, while McCready and Pearl Jam were on the front lines of the alternative music that pretty much decimated 80s metal from the mainstream.  Now, the two musicians are basically equals.  Both groups raise the question of whether musicians can be great on their own or are they really stronger as the sum of all parts.  RNDM borrows the sound and style of Pearl Jam from the old days as if they're better doing what they do best.  Walking Papers does the opposite.  They toss the styles of their previous bands out the door and try to establish their own sound.  They have more in common with King Crimson or Black Label Society then they do with anything they've done before. It's interesting to be able to hear both strategies side by side.  On one hand it's comforting to hear the familiar sound of a band you love...but it's also an intriguing listen when a band goes out on a limb and tries something new.  Getting two side projects at the same time with both styles is basically the best of both worlds.

Here are the 11 Best Side Project Albums by Pearl Jam Members:
  1. Brad - Shame (1993)
  2. Mad Season - Above (1995)
  3. Brad - Interiors (1997)
  4. Eddie Vedder - Into The Wild (2007)
  5. The Rockfords - The Rockfords (2000)
  6. Jeff Ament - Tone (2008)
  7. Brad - Welcome to Discovery Park (2002)
  8. Eddie Vedder - Ukulele Songs (2011)
  9. Tres Mts. - Three Moutains (2011)
  10. Three Fish - The Quiet Table (1996)
  11. Stone Gossard - Bayleaf (2001)

The 11 Best Linkin Park Songs

On December 5th, 1994 I spent the evening standing out front of the Tower Records in Westwood, CA, waiting for the midnight release of Pearl Jam's Vitalogy.  The line stretched down the block, packed with kids who could have just as easily showed up the next morning to buy the exact same album.  It wasn't like we were waiting to buy concert tickets that might sell out...this album was going to be available everywhere.  Even Walmart had it.  But standing in line in the freezing temperatures (for LA that means like 50) was a rite of passage.  You earned the privilege to be one of the first to hear the album.  I stood in line with my friend Mike, shivering with anticipation...and we did nothing but talk shit about my friend Barry who didn't come with us because his girlfriend wouldn't let him.  He asked us to buy him a copy.  We told him to fuck off.  We earned it...he could go to Walmart.

The anticipation made the album more exciting.  It made it more worthwhile to go home at one in the morning and listen to the album on repeat, dissecting what the hell the band was thinking with "Hey Foxymophandlemama."  And we loved ever minute.  That excitement/anticipation is all but gone from buying music today.  Now, you can jump on your computer at 9:00 PM pacific time on any Monday...and get all the new releases with one click.  There's no build-up...you don't have to earn anything...and honestly, I feel like it waters down the material.  When you had to work to get your music, it made you appreciate it more. Now...when it's handed to you...you take it for granted.

So, what does this have to do with Linkin Park?  I'm sure most of you are cringing that I would even dare include them in a post mentioning Pearl Jam.  But this is an argument in defense of this very schizophrenic band, who might be the only ones who still get it.  Though they made a name for themselves as a metal/rap band, they've fought to break out of that mold.  And they've lost a lot of fans along the way.  Even I was a hater of their third album where they embraced their inner Backstreet boy.  But the fourth album, which pissed most fans off, won me back.  Their fourth album (A Thousand Suns) was a prog album, and it was freaking great.  For a band who had made a career crushing alternative radio with catchy singles...it took a lot of balls to release an album that had almost no potential singles, that left even the Mars Volta scratching their heads in disbelief.  This was the kind album Porcupine Tree should be putting out...not Linkin Park.  How in the world could this band snub commercial radio... the very thing that had made them who they are?  It's strangely similar to another band in the 90s who gave the middle finger to MTV and stopped making videos at the height of their popularity? hmmm...

Isn't this what bands are supposed to do?  Aren't they supposed to evolve...morph...re-invent themselves?  Aren't they supposed to question the establishment?  Are they supposed to challenge what is expected of them?  Aren't they supposed to piss off fans in the hunt for something completely different?  And doesn't that make it more exciting?  Doesn't the anticipation of what crazy thing they'll do next make you a bit more interested?  I know I'll never convince everyone that Linkin Park deserves a second chance...but maybe I can convince you that they are not the sell-outs that you may have thought they are.

Here are the 11 Best Songs By Linkin Park:
  1. Numb/Encore (Collision Course)
  2. In The End (Hybrid Theory)

The 11 Best Albums of 2009: 12-22 (Part 4)

I've noticed that my excitement for new releases is much lower than it used to be. When a new Pearl Jam album came out...I lined up at midnight at Tower Records just to be the first to buy it. I still go buy albums the day they come out...but it's usually a Tuesday ritual rather than a special treat. But this year...there were a few albums that got my juices going. The 4 unreleased Beck albums were quite nice since they were unavailable in a store. But these were given away for free. So, as cool as they were...anyone could get them. But there was another unreleased album that I got fanatic over. That would be the Sparklehorse/DangerMouse album...why? Because it was never available anywhere. Not to download. Not to buy. Getting a copy wasn't just exciting...it was like a treasure hunt. For those few days while I tracked down each song, I was excited over a new release since...as I had been when waiting in line at midnight.

New month means new $5 albums. Check out the store for the new Lady Gaga, 50 Cent, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Alec Ounsworth, Major Lazer, new Green Day, Wale, Dodos, My Morning Jacket, and a buttload of Christmas albums.

The 11 Best Pearl Jam Songs (00s):

It was a tough call on a couple tracks this time around. "Brother" is technically a Ten-era outtake...but did not get a full release until the Ten Remaster from this year. So where does it belong? The 90s or 00s? I was going to leave it in the 90s...but it had no effect on the 90s and didn't get the proper mastering until just this year...and actually received some decent radio play. Tons are songs are written by bands and sit for years on the shelf...then don't get the proper exposure until years...sometimes decades later. The official release of "Brother" was given to us in the 00s...so the 00s is should remain. "Hold On" was a similar debate. It's an Vs. era track that didn't get released until 03. Since it never saw the light as a B-side or Japanese bonus track...it also remains a part of this decade. But it doesn't make the list because it lost a coin toss to "Unemployable."

Here are the 11 Best Pearl Jam Songs (00s):

1. All or None (Riot Act)
2. Insignificance (Binaural)
3. Inside Job (Pearl Jam)
4. Brother (Ten Remaster)
5. Sad (Lost Dogs - Binaural B-Side)
6. Grievance (Binaural)
7. World Wide Suicide (Pearl Jam)
8. Save You (Riot Act)
9. Thin Air (Binaural)
10. Unemployable (Pearl Jam)
11. Love, Reign O'er Me (Reign Over Me)

The 11 Best Pearl Jam Songs (90s):

With the Beatles Rock Band and Pearl Jam's exclusive deal at Target...the term "sell-out" is getting thrown around way too much. "Sell-out" should really be the term that describes a band who was on the outside looking in that sold their principles to get a good seat on the bus. For example...if Fugazi all of sudden hired Will.I.Am to produce their album of hip-pop for an exclusive deal at Walmart about how wonderful corporate America is...then they would sell-outs. Pearl Jam is already popular. They don't need Target...in fact, they don't need anyone. If anything, Target needs them more than they need it. And you can still buy Backspacer at itunes...so it's not that exclusive. Physical CDs are going away fast. Having a physical CD is a token of a past social meme. But if you do go out and buy the disc, the band is rewarding everyone with a free download of 2 Pearl Jam concerts of your choice. And they're Pearl Jam concerts...so they're not short. That's helluva a lot music for the price of one CD. Giving away free concerts doesn't make you a sell-out...if anything, it shows you're still as true to the fans as you've ever been.

Here are the 11 Best Pearl Jam Songs (90s):

1. Porch (Ten) 2. Black (Ten)
3. Animal (Vs.)
4. Not For You (Vitalogy)
6. Corduroy (Vitalogy)
7. Alive (Ten)
8. I Got Id (Merkinball)
9. Indifference (Vs.)
10. Yellow Ledbetter (Ten B-Side)
11. Do The Evolution (Yield)

The Unknown: Pearl Jam - Found Cats

My quest to buy the new Pearl re-issue of "Ten" is a surefire sign of our times. I went to 4 different stores to find it: Best Buy, Target, Fryes, and Costco. Everyone had the typical 2-disc version. But no one carried the 3-disc (CD/DVD) version. I even went to one of the last standing CD stores in the Valley...they too were sold out. At this point, my focus is waning...the longer I have to think about purchasing it...the less I'm likely to do it.

I'm torn about the new Pearl Jam. I feel like the re-issue treatment falls a bit short. I am excited to hear the new remix of the album...but excited in the way I was to see the "updated" version of Star Wars. They were exciting once...then I went back to watching the old versions. I kinda feel the same way about Ten...sounds exciting once (no pun intended) but I know I'm going to prefer the original version. And the bonus tracks...though are all very very cool...where are the Ten B-sides? We've seen some on Lost Dogs...but what about I've Got a Feeling? And why a DVD of MTV Unplugged? Why not an audio version too?...or at least a download code to get it? Until it gets sorted out...here's the remaining B-side studio tracks from PJ that didn't quite make the Lost Dogs cut.

11 Great Eddie Vedder Performances (sans Pearl Jam)

Eddie Vedder is a rock n roll legend. He's an icon. He's the voice of a generation. When I was in college, I would buy an entire CD just to hear him singing back-up vocals for 3 seconds. Every thing he did was genius. At 19, I didn't have a lot to go on...but for my generation, he was ours and I wanted everything he ever did to be mine.

Sixteen years since the first Pearl Jam album, Eddie Vedder has done the thing that everyone knew he would do someday...that is releasing a solo CD. But in true Eddie Vedder fashion, he is releasing it not as a vanity project, instead, he did it as a soundtrack to the upcoming film, Into The Wild (directed by Sean Penn).

The early verdict, IMO, is great. This might be the best thing I've heard from Vedder since before I packed up my last flannel shirt. But this isn't the first time Vedder went off without the foundation of his badmates...here is a brief tour though some of his other visitations.

11 Great Eddie Vedder Performances (sans Pearl Jam)

1. Against The 70s - Eddie Vedder and Mike Watt
2. Break On Through - Eddie Vedder and the Doors
3. Light My Fire - Eddie Vedder and the Doors
4. Roadhouse Blues - Eddie Vedder and the Doors
5. Devil Doll - Eddie Vedder and the Supersuckers
6. I See Red - Eddie Vedder and Neil Finn
7. Croon Spoon - Eddie Vedder and Susan Surandon
8. Hymn - Eddie Vedder and Hovercraft
9. Watch It Die - Eddie Vedder and Bad Religion
10. Take Me Out to The Ball Game - Cubs Game

THE UNKNOWN: Pearl Jam - MTV Unplugged 1992

It was said best on Monday Night Football...The 49ers, Green Bay, Denver, and Cowboys are all undefeated and OJ Simpson is back in jail...it's the mid-90s all over again. Well, I'll add one more piece of nostalgia to that list...Eddie Vedder is back on top of the charts. This time he's solo. If you don't know that he's releasing a solo CD for the soundtrack to film, Into The Wild, then you must be living under a rock...or you just have something better to do with your life.

In celebration of the 90s flashback, here's Pearl Jam's MTV Unplugged performance from 1992.
