The Best Playlist for September 2015

  September has always had that schizophrenic nature of being placed in the middle of the year, yet it's the month that represents the beginning of many new things in our culture.  September is the month that a new school year begins, it's the month when TV shows begin their new season and new TV shows debut, and it's the beginning of the award season for Golden Globes, Oscars and Grammys. It's also the time of the year when record labels begin releasing their biggest albums of the year, gearing up for the holiday season.  There are more new album releases in the first two weeks of September than in July and August combined.  (I just made that up but it sounds accurate.)  To kick off this new start as we head into the end of the year, I've concocted a playlist for such a time.  I've chosen a wide variety of music from old artists, new artists, rock to hip-hop to dance and everything in between.  Some of these are new songs to debut this month, others are from albums that will be released in the coming weeks.  Sit back, enjoy, while watching the new NFL season. The 11 Best New Order Songs (Post 1990)

Recently Sony issued an 86 song box set of unreleased Bob Dylan recordings.  It was a European only release, limited to only 100 copies, and it was done for one reason only: because the copyrights were about to expire.  Not only is it astonishing that there are 86 unreleased Bob Dylan recordings from the early part of his career that we've yet to hear...but it's even more astonishing that Dylan has been such an iconic recording artist for over 50 years.  In today's industry it's challenging just to stay relevant from breakfast to dinner.-, let alone have people remember you a year from now.  But 50 years.  This box set is in such demand...copies of it are selling on ebay for over a $1,000.  Can you imagine anyone spending that much on Justin Beiber outtakes in 50 years?  Can you imagine anyone spending $10 on his outtakes by December?

New Order puts out their own outtake album today.  Check it out.  Thirty-two years into their career, New Order still knows how to make music worth listening to.

The Unknown: Bad Lieutenant - Never Cry Another Tear

For those who don't know. Bad Lieutenant is basically New Order minus Peter Hook. It's Summer on vocals. Morris on drums, and Cunningham (who replaced Gilbert) from Siren's Call. The only new addition is for Hooky's bass.

How unknown is this band? Well...I didn't know they existed and I'm a huge New Order fan. I knew the band broke up...but didn't know the others had reformed. My early review is that this is a solid release. It sounds more like their 80s material than their more recently "electronica-dancy" material. It's not as great as their 80s material...but a solid first step.

Now I can't wait to hear Hooky's new band Freebass.

We all have music that acts as the soundtrack to our lives. There's always that certain song that reminds you of a day in high school. Or there's a band that reminds you of an ex-girlfriend. And everytime that song or band starts playing a vivd memory comes crashing back as if someone flipped a light switch. New Order is that band to me. Listening to New Order is my audio memory of high school. Everytime I listen to Love Vigilantes, I can remember the first time I heard the song. I was standing on a high school pool deck waiting for our relay team to race. Some of the older kids were playing Low-Life and singing along to the song. 20 years later, that memory sticks with me better than almost anything I did last week. Why is that audio senses afflict such vivid memories? Maybe that's my attraction to music so much. A great song never changes. It's always great. And everytime you listen to it...it reminds you what is so great about it.
