The 11 Best Bob Dylan Songs (1969-1971)

I think we need Bob Dylan now more than ever.  The US is on the brink of war and instead of centering our social debate around this event, we're obsessed with an ex-Disney porn star who can't carry a note.  Dylan has never been known for his vocal range and he's always had a knack for thumbing his nose at the establishment.  But Dylan never wanted to be the voice of his generation, he became the voice out of the purity of his lyrics and emotions.  He questioned societal restraints and fought for the rights of the lower classes, the persecuted races, and the underprivileged.  He didn't do it for fame and fortune, he did it because he believed in it. During the height of the Vietnam War, Dylan's voice was a beacon of hope.  As if saying that change could come if we demanded more of ourselves.  Dylan never promised the answers but only opened the door by saying..."what if..."  Mylie Cyrus covered a Bob Dylan song a couple years back (You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go).  Though she did a competent version there's something missing.  The human element.  It was too clinical.  Too perfect.  And that's not what Dylan was about.  He wasn't about a crazy stage show.  He wasn't about elaborate costumes (except for may the Rolling Thunder Revue).  Dylan played for the music.  And his music has changed the world. The world is becoming a more radical place.  We need less drugged out teddy bears and a little more tambourine, man.

The 10th edition of the Bootleg Series is out now.  Another Self Portrait focuses on demos, outtakes, and unreleased material from three Dylan albums (Nahsville Skyline, New Morning, and Self Portrait) between 1969-1971.

The 11 Best Albums by Bob Dylan

Last week Bob Dylan released his 567th album, which is only a few short of Ryan Adams.  Marketing a new album has vastly changed since Dylan strummed it onto the scene almost 50 years ago.  You can’t push your songs to radio.  There’s nowhere to buy a physical album.  You could have the next big EDM-artist do multiple remixes but Dylan’s music really doesn’t lend itself to that.  But even if you were to do a decent sounding remix of a new Dylan track, you would need to be on bath salts to enjoy it.  So, how does Bob Dylan…one of the most iconic singers of all time…do to market a brand as big as he is?  He builds a pop-up store.  That’s right…Bob Dylan had his own store.  A store that sells nothing but Bob Dylan merchandise like CDs, vinyl, t-shirts, pants, hats, furniture, cars, musical instruments, guns, toilets…okay, I made up the last one.  This is brilliant.  When you think of Dylan and where he came from…he embodied the anti-corporate mentality.  Today, it’s only fitting that he snubs the record industry by succeeding at the one thing they failed at doing…running a record store.

The 11 Best Bob Dylan Songs of 00s

It's always a good day when a new Bob Dylan album gets released. But narrowing Dylan's career down to a small sampling of 11 songs is practically impossible. A few months back I did Dylan's 111 best songs...and that was a vast and difficult undertaking. Dylan's worn so many different musical hats, comparing his early work to his current work is like comparing apples to automobiles. It's almost like comparing two completely different artists. This decade has proven to be a very productive one for Dylan, churning out more music than many artists 40 years his junior. The music he made this decade deserves its own recognition.

Here are the 11 Best Bob Dylan Songs of 00s:
1. Things Have Changed (Wonder Boys Sdtk)
2. Mississippi (Love and Theft)
3. Ain't Talkin' (Modern Times)
4. 'Cross The Green Mountain (Gods and Generals Sdtk)
5. Spirit on the Water (Modern Times)
6. Tell Ol Bill (North Country Sdtk)
7. Po' Boy (Love and Theft)
8. Workingman's Blues (Modern Times)
9. I Can't Get You Off Of My Mind (Timeless - Tribute to Hank Williams)
10. Huck's Tune (Lucky You Sdtk)
11. Thunder on the Mountain (Modern Times)

The 11 Best Albums of 1979

I had a friend Anthony who was obsessed with Pink Floyd. One day he spent the entire afternoon a dual cassette deck trying to line up the last song on the Wall so it would transition smoothly back into the first song. He was so proud of the 3-second splice that he made a mixed tape with that intertwined between every song. As strange (and super obsessive) as this was, there were something about his actions that embodied the mojo of his actions. That seemingly meaningless minutia was of the utmost importance. Maybe that's because everyone was smoking so much pot or that after the mayhem of the 60s...it was time to chill out.

Here are the 11 Best Albums of 1979:

1. Pink Floyd - The Wall
2. Michael Jackson - Off the Wall
3. AC/DC - Highway To Hell
4. Led Zeppelin - In Through the Out Door
5. The Police - Regatta de Blanc
6. Van Halen - Van Halen 2
7. Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures (Disorder)
8. The Ramones - End of the Century
9. Prince - Prince
10. Split Enz - Frenzy
