The Best Playlist for September 2015

September has always had that schizophrenic nature of being placed in the middle of the year, yet it's the month that represents the beginning of many new things in our culture.  September is the month that a new school year begins, it's the month when TV shows begin their new season and new TV shows debut, and it's the beginning of the award season for Golden Globes, Oscars and Grammys. It's also the time of the year when record labels begin releasing their biggest albums of the year, gearing up for the holiday season.  There are more new album releases in the first two weeks of September than in July and August combined.  (I just made that up but it sounds accurate.)  To kick off this new start as we head into the end of the year, I've concocted a playlist for such a time.  I've chosen a wide variety of music from old artists, new artists, rock to hip-hop to dance and everything in between.  Some of these are new songs to debut this month, others are from albums that will be released in the coming weeks.  Sit back, enjoy, while watching the new NFL season. The Best September 2015 Playlist This Month:
  1. The Arcs - Outta Of My Mind
  2. New Order - Restless
  3. Neon Indian - Annie
  4. Disclosure - Willing & Able
  5. The Weeknd - In The Night
  6. Small Black - No One Wants It To Happen To You
  7. Big Grams - Fell In The Sun

The 11 Best Songs By The Weeknd

Jewish holidays are like R&B.  No matter how happy they are, you always leave them feeling guiltier than when you started.   Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year.  In Judaism, you try to let go of everything bad that happened the year before and focus on doing better in the coming year.  Rosh Hashanah is basically a Jewish mother, "why can't you do better than you did in 5773?"  But Rosh Hashanah is ultimately a time of celebration, which is why there was a new John Legend album.  Even though there's time to reflect, it is really about jubilation. Today is Yom Kippur and to coincide with it we have a new album by The Weeknd.  Yom Kippur is the day of atonement.  It's a time when Jews fast from sundown to sundown.  It a time of hunger, suffering, and inner reflection.  As dry, sullen, and bleak that The Weeknd's music is, there is an inner reflection that shines through.  Would the new album be a great soundtrack at a break the fast sedar dinner?  Thematically, yes.  So if there is a rabbi out there who is pumping Kissland Saturday evening, just after sundown, then that's a dinner you want to attend, whether you're Jewish or not.

Free Music Friday (Thursday Edition): The Weeknd - Thursday

I don't know what I like more about the Weeknd...is it the fact that he put out one of my favorite albums of the year so far, creating an entirely new genre with his dark heroine sheik beats and angst-ridden croon?  Or, it is because that after his debut album (that he gave away for free) he turned down the massive avalanche of major label proposals to release his second album...a mere 7 months later...again...FOR FREE.

The Weeknd has received rave reviews by almost everyone and has been catapulted to the top of most best of 2011 lists.  This is without a label...and without promotion.  How did he do it?  With great music.  Not even the millions of dollars from Lady Gaga's promotional team could match The Weeknd's ambivalent cool.

It's nice to know a great album can trump a great marketing campaign.

The 11 Best Debut Albums of 2011 (so far)

All these albums are solid and every one of these artists is someone you should keep your eye on.  But there's one artist in particular I want to point attention to and that's The Weeknd.  An unknown artist who came from nowhere that has taken the blog world by storm with his first mix-tape/album.  Here's the kicker...he's giving it away for free.  What is original about the debut isn't just the music itself but the method in which he's distributing it.  The Weeknd has all but abandoned the traditional style of distributing music and fully embraced the 21st century.  Without a publicist or marketing department, he's managed to become well-known all on his own.  While the major labels are fighting tooth and nail for the fraction of floor space left on retail floors, the new emerging artists are passing them by...by embracing the future.

The 11 Best Debut Albums of 2011 (so far):

1.  Yuck - Yuck
2.  James Blake - James Blake
3.  The Head and the Heart - The Head and the Heart
4.  The Weeknd - House of Balloons
5.  Foster the People - Torches
6.  The Joy Formidable - The Big Roar
7.  The Naked and Famous - Young Blood
8.  The Vaccines - What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?
9.  Cults - Cults
10.  Ringo Deathstar - Colour Trip
