The 111 Best Hair Metal Songs of All Time

Knowing this genre wasn't the most difficult part of making this list.  I know this music better than I know the names of the members of my family.  The difficult journey in making this list was figuring out what bands belonged.  There are some giants of the metal field that have been obviously excluded.  Metallica is too metal.  AC/DC was too hard rock.  Iron Maiden and Judas Priest didn't belong.  Queensryche is really a prog band with more in common with Pink Floyd than Pretty Boy Floyd. Van Halen and Kiss were a tough call.  Both bands laid the foundation for the glam/hair metal to come...and even flirted with very cheesy makeovers...but neither fully committed, which really left the two of them squarely rooted in 70s rock.  On the flip side, the Scorpions and Whitesnake both started in 70s rock but completely embraced the hair metal movement, committed to a full make over.

The 90s wrecked havoc on the hair metal scene...but there's been a small comeback.  Sure you could argue to include the Darkness but then maybe Queen should be considered, too. But the comeback is really all because of the heroics of Steel Panther...with their full-on tongue-in-cheek Spinal Tap homage they are single-handedly trying to resurrect the genre.  They've been a badass cover band for years...and are finally making their own music that is as good if not better than the music they're used to mimicking.

The 11 Best Hair Metal Albums You've Forgotten:

There was a time when people scoffed at Hair Metal. But now with bands like Fall Out Boy, Paramore, and Daughtry being the popular rock bands of the day...I think everyone wishes for a return to that craziness that was the 80s. Everyone thinks Adam Lambert is ground-breaking for his androgynous style. Seriously? Have you seen a Poison video? Kings of Leon are "cutting edge" because they have a song called "Sex On Fire." What about Warrant's "Cherry Pie," Faster Pussycat's "Bathroom Wall," Winger's "Seventeen?" I mean seriously...they may not have been the best bands to ever rock our worlds...but they at least knew how to rock.

Steel Panther (the world's greatest metal cover band) releases their first album of all new material this week, called Feel The Steel. And even as tongue-in-cheek as their material is...it's still far more rocking that anything else that's out there.

Before you run out and buy the album (which you should absolutely do)...here's a look back at some of the great hidden gems of the glam metal years. Everyone knows about the Hysterias...the Slippery When Wets...the Dr. Feelgoods...but what else was there when you peeled back the top layer?

The 11 Best Whitesnake Songs

Blogging is becoming its own monster. Posting is now becoming a competition. Whether it's being the first to post Jeff Tweedy doing the theme song to Christina Appelgate's sitcom, "Jesse" (I have this) or the acoustic Nirvana gig at the UCLA radio station in 1990 (I used to have this), each blog wants to be the one that brings the most viewers to their blog because they are offering the coolest free shit.

My intention today was to post the White Stripes B-Sides album called, "Giraffe." It features 14 White Stripes B-Sides from the first half of their career. Then a couple of days from now, I would post the second B-Sides comp from the second half of their career called, "Get In Front of Me Jesus." But the only problem with that is every one under the sun is posting White Stripes B-Sides. I would just be lost in the crowd.

Then I thought about posting a White Stripes concert...those are also all over the internet...

Here's a good one from Michigan 02 (http://www.whitestripes.net/downloads.php)

I already posted their best songs, which was met with mild excitement. I thought about posting the best Polyphonic Spree songs...but does anyone really care about Tim DeLaughter?

So, that left me with one true option...the best Whitesnake songs. For all of you who thought Whitesnake was a forgettable 80s hair metal band, then you are sorely mistaken. They may be legends for having the coolest video of all time. If you were a teenage boy in the late 80s, the visual of Tawni Kaitan dancing on the white corvette is an image that may have defined your pubescent years.

But what a lot of people don't know or recall is that most members of Whitesnake came from the band Deep Purple, including lead singer David Coverdale. Their early work was a grungy blast of rock blues that could have possibly been the offspring of Led Zeppelin and Thin Lizzy. They sold out to the aerosol companies in the late 80s, still managing to deliver some gems. But their early work is where they truly shined.

Here are the 11 Best Whitesnake Songs:

1. Here I Go Again (Whitesnake/Saints & Sinners)
2. Is This Love? (Whitesnake)
3. Ain't No Love In The Heart of the City (Snakebite)
4. Time Is Right For Love (Trouble)
5. Victim of Love (Saints & Sinners)
6. Fool For Your Lovin' (Ready an' Willing)
7. Standing in the Shadow (Slide It In)
8. Til The Day I Die (Come An' Get It)
9. Breakdown (Snakebite)
10. Ain't Gonna Cry No More (Ready an' Willing)
11. Crying in the Rain (Saints & Sinners)
